Unique Valentine's Day Ideas for University of Utah Students

By Solveig Rundquist on February 13, 2013

Valentine’s Day is on its way, and love is in the air… Though in Salt Lake City, you may have to sift through the smog to find it.

According to a new survey by social network Foursquare, Salt Lake is one of the least romantic cities in the nation. That’s not what a college girl wants to hear three days before that special day. But the survey was based on the number of check-ins at  “romantic spots,” and location’s, not everything. Show Foursquare what romance really is with these unique Valentine’s Day dates.

Spicy Bachata with that Someone

DF Dance Studio  on 2978 South and State Street is offering a romantic dance class session for couples this Valentine’s Day. For $25 you and your sweetheart can learn one of the most romantic Latin dances. So swing by at 7 p.m. and get swaying with that special someone! The first hour is bachata and the second is swing dancing.

Slip into a Fairytale Romance

For those who prefer to watch instead of getting all sweaty themselves, Ballet West is putting on the classic tale of Cinderella. Go opening night and enjoy the classic romance with your own prince? Prices range from $19 to $75, and students can get tickets half-off the day of the performance starting at 10 a.m. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Love Songs All Night Long

If music is your cup of lover’s tea, but you can deal without the fairy godmothers and mice, head over to the annual Valentine’s Day concert  at Westminster College. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 each, though if you’ve got a buddy who’s a student at Westminster you may be able to score a free seat.

PDA the Artsy Way

Even if PDA’s not really your style, you might want to reconsider this Valentine’s Day. Join the Master of Fine Arts group at the University of Utah opening reception of their new exhibition, Public Display of Awkwardness . The exhibit will be open all day at the Gittins Gallery, but drop in between 6 and 9 p.m. for refreshments, too. You get to see unique art projects while supporting fellow Utes with a cookie in hand. Oh, and it’s free!

Sleigh You Love Me

If you prefer a quieter Valentine’s Day away from it all, why not consider a sleigh ride for two? We’ve still got a  few weeks of winter weather, so stop cursing the snow and enjoy it by cuddling up to the sound of jingle bells  and horse hooves.  Two places you can take an old-fashioned and romantic sleigh ride are All Seasons Adventures in Park City and Boulder Mountain Ranch at Deer Valley.

Hopefully these out-of-the-ordinary options will give you some ideas on how to make this Valentine’s Day your own. Where you are doesn’t matter, and any place and activity can be romantic with the right person. Happy Valentine’s Day, Utes!
